India Open to International Sports with Pakistan, But Not Bilateral Series

Union Sports Minister Clarifies India's Stance on Sports with Pakistan
Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Sports Minister, has clarified the difference between international and bilateral sports interactions with Pakistan. In a media briefing, he emphasized that India is willing to participate in international competitions that include Pakistan, whether in cricket, hockey, or other sports. However, he reiterated that bilateral series are not an option, consistent with India's longstanding policy due to Pakistan's links to cross-border terrorism.
“We are open to competing in global events, but our government's position on bilateral relations is well-known,” Mandaviya stated.
Pakistan Hockey Teams Seek Approval for Upcoming Tournaments in India
The Pakistan Hockey Federation has requested permission from its government to send teams to participate in the Hockey Asia Cup 2025, which is scheduled to take place in Rajgir, Bihar from August 27 to September 7, as well as the Junior Hockey World Cup.
Mandaviya confirmed that Indian authorities will provide visas to Pakistani athletes for both tournaments. He remarked, “The decision now lies with them. We will issue the visas; it is up to their government to send the teams.”
Asia Cup: A Pathway to the World Cup
The Asia Cup holds significant importance, as the champion will secure a direct entry into the 2026 Hockey World Cup, which is set to occur in Amsterdam, Netherlands from August 14 to 30. Defending champions South Korea, with five titles to their name, will be formidable opponents, while both India and Pakistan aim for their fourth championship.
The tournament will feature eight teams: India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Oman, and Chinese Taipei, divided into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals, with the final scheduled for September 7.
Upcoming National Sports Governance Bill
Mandaviya also revealed that the National Sports Governance Bill will be introduced in the forthcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, commencing on July 21. This legislation aims to create a regulatory board with the authority to recognize and fund National Sports Federations (NSFs).
The proposed board will ensure that federations maintain high standards of administration, finance, and ethics, with the goal of enhancing transparency and accountability in Indian sports governance.
