India Launches Mascot Design Contest for BWF World Championships 2026
Nationwide Mascot Design Contest Announced
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has initiated a nationwide contest for designing a mascot for the upcoming BWF World Championships 2026. This initiative invites fans, artists, and creators to contribute to the identity of this prestigious badminton event. The contest aims to enhance fan engagement while celebrating India's cultural diversity and its growing legacy in badminton, marking a unique effort by BAI to connect the community with the sport.
Celebrating India's Badminton Legacy
With the BWF World Championships returning to India after a 17-year hiatus, this initiative highlights the significance of the event and India's emergence as a badminton powerhouse. Over the past decade, India has secured 15 World Championships medals, including PV Sindhu's historic gold in 2019 and Satwik-Chirag's bronze last year. As New Delhi gears up to host this global event, the mascot search presents a chance to create a visual identity that embodies India's sporting achievements and cultural richness. The contest is open to participants of all ages and will run from April 18 to May 10, with the winner receiving INR 25,000 and VIP tickets to the semi-finals or finals.
A Fan-Centric Approach to Showcase India's Spirit
"Badminton is cherished across India, transcending regions and cultures, and this diversity is the essence of the sport in our nation. With the BWF World Championships coming to India, we aim to celebrate this narrative through a fan-centric approach. This competition allows fans to contribute to the tournament's identity, ensuring that it reflects not only world-class competition but also the cultural creativity of our people. We look forward to seeing how fans express this spirit through their designs," stated Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary of BAI.
Mascot to Represent Indian Culture and Badminton
The BWF World Championships will feature top badminton players from around the world, making India a focal point for champions and cultures. The mascot is expected to embody a fusion of modern India and its rich heritage while incorporating badminton elements—such as form, movement, and equipment—to create a design that resonates globally. Entries will be judged based on creativity, originality, thematic relevance, and visual appeal, with the winning mascot serving as the central visual identity for the tournament across promotional platforms.
Enhancing Fan Engagement Ahead of the Championships
In addition to the contest, this initiative seeks to strengthen fan engagement leading up to the BWF World Championships 2026, which will take place in New Delhi from August 17-23. It provides a platform for creative communities to participate in this global sporting event. As the world's best players prepare to compete, the mascot is anticipated to become a defining symbol of the tournament's character and energy, reinforcing India's status as a key player on the international badminton stage.
