Introduction of India's First Professional Basketball League

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7: The inaugural professional basketball league in India has officially been launched, featuring competitive formats in both 5×5 and 3×3 for men and women. This initiative aims to create a robust professional environment that enables athletes nationwide to consider basketball as a viable career option.

Unveiled on Friday, this league is a joint effort between the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) and ACG Sports Private Limited. The goal is to transform basketball from a niche sport into a mainstream activity, enhancing how it is played, experienced, and supported across the country.

To steer the league's global strategy and operations, Jeremy Loeliger, the former CEO and Commissioner of Australia's National Basketball League (NBL), has been appointed as the Director of ACG Sports. In this capacity, Loeliger will develop the league's framework, introducing international standards of governance, competition, and commercial innovation to India, as stated in a press release from BFI and ACG.

“Basketball is more than just a game; it serves as a platform for fostering character, leadership, and opportunities,” remarked Karan Singh, Managing Director of ACG. He added, “Our aim for this professional league is to create a self-sustaining ecosystem where every passionate and talented child can envision a future in basketball in India. We appreciate our partnership with BFI in realizing this dream. While this is a significant first step, we recognize that establishing a thriving basketball ecosystem will require ongoing effort and collective support to achieve its full potential.”

As part of its long-term vision, ACG plans to establish India's first fully residential high-performance center within the year. This academy will boast world-class facilities, attract elite coaching talent from the U.S. and Australia, and provide comprehensive training programs for players, coaches, and referees. The curriculum will emphasize nutrition, mental wellness, and academic balance, ensuring the holistic development of future basketball stars.

Aadhav Arjuna, President of the Basketball Federation of India, expressed, “This collaboration with ACG is unprecedented. It is driven by a clear vision, structured for long-term impact, and deeply understands the needs of Indian basketball. We are not just enhancing visibility; we are building real momentum and global credibility. Our goal is to secure medals at the Asian Games and Olympics.”

Kulvinder Singh Gill, Secretary General of the Basketball Federation of India, added, “This league will create new avenues for young Indian talent to develop, compete professionally, and gain invaluable experience alongside international players and coaches.”

The complete framework for the league, including team structures, competition formats, player eligibility, and governance models, is currently being developed with insights from global basketball experts and key industry stakeholders. Further announcements regarding participation guidelines, venue requirements, and operational protocols will be made in a phased manner.

In the upcoming months, the newly established League Council will oversee standards and operations, while nationwide scouting initiatives, tailored athlete development tracks, and engaging fan programs will lay the groundwork for a vibrant, inclusive, and commercially sustainable basketball culture in India.
