Qingdao (China), Feb 5: In a thrilling encounter, the defending champions India experienced a narrow 2-3 defeat to Thailand during their second Group Y match at the Women’s Division of the Badminton Asia Team Championships on Thursday.
Thailand showcased a remarkable performance, securing the top spot in Group Y, while India finished in second place, with both teams advancing to the knockout rounds of the tournament.
The Indian women's team started strong, with world No. 42 Tanvi Sharma achieving an impressive victory over world No. 16 Busanan Ongbamrungphan, winning 21-14, 17-21, 21-18 in a match that lasted one hour and three minutes.
Following this, the doubles pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly triumphed over Tidapron Kleebyeesun and Nattamon Laisuan with scores of 21-14, 20-22, 21-11, extending India's lead to 2-0.
However, Thailand fought back as Rakshitha Ramraj struggled to maintain the momentum, losing to 19-year-old Pitchamon Opatniputh with scores of 19-21 and 17-21.
Thailand leveled the match when Tanisha Crasto and Shruti Mishra fell to Hathaithip Mijad and Napapakorn Tungkasatan, with scores of 21-19, 14-21, and 15-21.
In the crucial fifth match, Malvika Bansod was defeated by Pornpicha Choeikeewong, with scores of 18-21 and 14-21 in a 40-minute contest, allowing Thailand to clinch the tie and finish first in the group.
This tournament also serves as Asia’s qualifying event for the Thomas and Uber Cup finals, which are set to take place in Horsens, Denmark, in April-May.
India's women are the reigning champions, while China holds the title for the men's division. The Indian men's team has previously secured bronze medals in 2016 and 2020.
Earlier, India had a strong start to their title defense, dominating Myanmar with a 5-0 victory in their opening match of Group Y.
