The expected decline in India's medal tally, which was 61 in the 2022 Birmingham edition, is attributed to the smaller scale of the 2026 Games. This change occurred after the original host, Victoria, withdrew, prompting Glasgow to step in with the condition of a reduced event size. This year, only 10 sports will be featured, a significant decrease from the 19 sports in the last edition.
Impact of Excluded Sports
Several key sports have been omitted from the 2026 roster, including women's cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, and squash. These disciplines contributed to 30 medals, which accounted for half of India's total in previous competitions.
