Kakamigahara: The Indian men's hockey team, the current Olympic bronze medallists, showcased their dominance by defeating Malaysia 5-1 to clinch the gold medal at the Asian Games held in Japan on Saturday. This victory not only marks their fifth gold at the Asian Games but also guarantees their spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
In a historic moment for Indian hockey, the eight-time Olympic champions secured their second consecutive gold, a first in their history. The match began with India taking control, spending most of the first quarter in the Malaysian half.
India's scoring spree included three penalty corners converted by captain Harmanpreet Singh (11th and 57th minutes) and Jugraj Singh (23rd minute). Additionally, vice-captain Hardik Singh netted a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute, while Shilanand Lakra capped off the scoring with a field goal in the 54th minute.
Malaysia managed to score once, with Shello Silverius finding the net from a field effort in the 14th minute. Malaysia took home the silver medal, while Pakistan secured bronze after defeating South Korea 5-3 earlier in the day.
In a remarkable achievement for Indian hockey, the women's team also claimed gold after a 44-year wait, defeating the reigning Olympic silver medallists and defending champions, China, with a score of 1-0 on Friday.
