India Clinches T20 World Cup 2026: Bumrah's Stellar Performance and Contract Changes
India's Historic T20 World Cup Victory
India has made history by winning the T20 World Cup 2026, marking the first time a team has secured three titles and achieved back-to-back victories. While Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah played a pivotal role in this triumph. He emerged as the joint-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, claiming 14 wickets, including an impressive 4/15 in the final match. Following this remarkable performance, Bumrah is poised to receive a significant financial reward from the BCCI, making him the highest-paid Indian cricketer this year.
On February 6, the BCCI unveiled the Central Contract List for the 2025-26 season, which saw the elimination of the A+ category that previously allowed players to earn Rs 7 crore annually. Bumrah, who was part of this category along with Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rohit Sharma, has now been moved to the A category, where he joins Jadeja and Shubman Gill as the top earners, each receiving Rs 5 crore.
According to a report from a leading publication, Bumrah is expected to earn Rs 7 crore, as the BCCI plans to compensate him for the Rs 2 crore difference from the A+ category. A BCCI source indicated that this decision stems from Bumrah's consistent performances across all formats of the game. “The board is exploring ways to ensure Bumrah is fairly compensated. It would be unjust to reduce his earnings from Rs 7 crore to Rs 5 crore. Other players have also seen downgrades despite strong performances, and there may be a reassessment of contract valuations,” the source stated.
Reasons Behind the Removal of the A+ Category
The A+ category was abolished following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20Is and Tests, along with Ravindra Jadeja's retirement from T20Is. These players, along with Bumrah, were previously included in the A+ category of the BCCI Central Contract list. The A+ category was intended for players who consistently participated in all three formats. With the retirements of the other three, they were reassigned to lower categories, with Virat and Rohit now in Group B and Jadeja in Group A. As Bumrah remained the sole player in the A+ category, the BCCI opted to eliminate this category entirely.
