India Announces Squad for Upcoming Test Series Against England
India's Test Squad Unveiled for England Series
On Saturday, May 24, Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), revealed a 16-member squad for the five-match Test series against England, set to commence on June 20.
The series opener will be held at Headingley, and the announcement has generated significant excitement as it signifies a new chapter in Indian Test cricket following the retirements of key players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin. Both Rohit and Kohli concluded their Test careers prior to this series, while Ashwin stepped away from international cricket during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
A major highlight from the squad announcement is the selection of Shubman Gill as the new Test captain for India. Gill takes over the leadership role after a successful stint by the previous captain, who led the team to notable victories at home.
In the race for captaincy, Gill was favored over Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul, with selectors and management opting for the 25-year-old due to his temperament and potential to guide the team through a transitional phase in red-ball cricket. Bumrah, a strong contender, withdrew from consideration due to injury and workload concerns.
Additionally, Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the vice-captain for the Test team, marking the start of a new leadership group expected to navigate the team through this pivotal transition following the era of Rohit and Kohli.
