India Aims to Host the 2038 Asian Games Amidst Competitive Bidding

India has officially expressed its interest in hosting the 2038 Asian Games, building on its recent successes in securing major sporting events. With the Indian Olympic Association reaching out to the Olympic Council of Asia, the country aims to leverage its existing sports infrastructure, particularly in Ahmedabad. However, it faces competition from South Korea and Mongolia. This bid is part of a larger strategy to enhance India's profile in global sports, following its successful bids for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the ongoing pursuit of the 2036 Olympics. The potential hosting of the Asian Games could significantly benefit India's sports landscape and economy.

India's Ambitious Bid for the 2038 Asian Games

India has officially shown interest in hosting the Asian Games in 2038, building on its recent efforts to secure the 2036 Olympic Games and having already obtained the rights to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Earlier this month, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) reached out to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to express its desire to organize the 2038 Asian Games. With the upcoming Asian Games scheduled for Aichi-Nagoya, Japan in 2026, followed by Doha in 2030 and Riyadh in 2034, the 2038 slot is currently available.

As reported by Indian Express, India's proposal was presented during the OCA Executive Board meeting in Sanya, China, on April 23. Following initial discussions, an evaluation team from the OCA is set to visit India to assess the viability of the bid. IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer mentioned that communication with OCA leadership has already begun, stating, “We are keen on bringing the Asian Games to India and have formally expressed our interest. We will continue discussions with the OCA.”

However, India will face tough competition from South Korea and Mongolia, both of which have also expressed their intent to host the 2038 Asian Games. To date, India has hosted the Asian Games twice, first in 1951 in New Delhi and again in 1982 in the same city. This latest bid is part of India's broader strategy to secure hosting rights for major sporting events, including the ongoing pursuit of the 2036 Olympics and the confirmed hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

Ahmedabad is being positioned as a key city for multi-sport events, aligning with India's vision for the 2038 Asian Games. An official involved in the planning noted that hosting the Games in 2038 could provide a strategic advantage, as significant investments are already being made in sports venues and urban infrastructure in Ahmedabad and throughout Gujarat. This could lead to a reduced overall cost burden, as existing facilities can be reused and integrated planning can enhance economic viability.
