India made a remarkable mark in athletics during the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Neeraj Chopra securing the silver medal and newcomer Yashvir Singh taking home the bronze in the men's javelin throw. This achievement marked a significant 1-2 finish for India on the podium. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage delivered an outstanding performance, winning the gold medal with a throw of 89.75m, achieved on his second attempt. Pathirage's impressive effort not only earned him the top position but also highlighted India's historic double podium finish with Chopra and Yashvir clinching silver and bronze, respectively.

Chopra's best throw measured 85.83m, placing him second. Although his final attempt resulted in a foul, he recognized it immediately, knowing it wasn't a valid throw. Nevertheless, his earlier performance was sufficient to secure the silver medal in his second Commonwealth Games appearance. While Chopra has always aspired for gold, his return to competitive athletics has been positive, adding another significant international podium finish to his accolades.

Yashvir Singh surprised many by winning bronze with a personal best throw of 85.41m in his sixth and final attempt. At just 24 years old and making his Commonwealth Games debut, he surpassed his previous best of 83.72m, successfully fending off strong competition from established athletes like Anderson Peters and Arshad Nadeem. With Chopra and Yashvir finishing second and third, India celebrated a historic double podium in the men's javelin throw, further emphasizing the nation's growing prowess in this discipline and contributing to a successful athletics campaign in Glasgow.

Additional Medals for India in Judo and Decathlon

In other events, Harsh Singh claimed the gold medal in the men's 60kg judo category, decisively defeating Australia's Joshua Katz by Waza-Ari (10-0) in the final. Additionally, Asmita Dey showcased a strong performance to secure the women's gold medal, overcoming Canada's Heidi Quach by Yuko (2-1) in a historic victory.

Tejaswin Shankar made history by winning the bronze medal in the decathlon, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat at the Commonwealth Games. Meanwhile, Yamini Mourya earned a silver medal in the women's 57 kg category after a closely contested final against England's Acelya Toprak.
