Iga Swiatek Advances to Wimbledon 2025 Semifinals After Defeating Liudmila Samsonova
Swiatek's Impressive Victory
In London, on July 10, Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the women's singles semifinals at Wimbledon 2025 by defeating Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets. The match concluded with a score of 6-2, 7-5, taking Swiatek one hour and 49 minutes to complete.
Initially, Samsonova held her ground, matching Swiatek in the first four games of the opening set. However, Swiatek managed to fend off a break point early on and maintained her strong performance throughout the match.
After overcoming four break points, the eighth seed executed two consecutive breaks, establishing a 3-0 lead at the beginning of the second set, extending her winning streak to seven games.
Despite Samsonova's efforts to equalize at 4-4 with her own breaks, she ultimately could not sustain the momentum, allowing Swiatek to secure her fifth break of the quarter-final and convert her second match point.
On the other side of the draw, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland reached her first Wimbledon semifinal by defeating seventh seed Mirra Andreeva with a score of 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/2). Bencic, a former top-10 player and Olympic gold medalist from Paris 2020, is the first Swiss woman to reach the semifinals at Wimbledon since Martina Hingis did so 27 years ago, having previously not advanced past the last 16 in her eight prior appearances.
In the men's singles, Novak Djokovic moved closer to his record-equaling eighth Wimbledon title by overcoming Flavio Cobolli, advancing to a remarkable 14th semifinal at the tournament. Djokovic showcased his resilience with a comeback victory, finishing the match 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
Next, Djokovic will face world number one Jannik Sinner, who eliminated Ben Shelton from the competition with a 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4 win.
