Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary talks about Babar Azam's performance as a batsman and captain in the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that if MS Dhoni had captained the same team, he would have led this team to a winning streak. Babar Azam has come under scrutiny as a leader after Pakistan's performance in the ICC World Cup 2023. The Men in Green are having an average tournament and things are not going easy for them. They suffered disappointing defeats against India, Australia, Afghanistan and South Africa, which hampered their position in the table.

Pakistan's qualification for the semi-finals will depend on the results of New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Before the tournament, they were considered as hot favorites but things did not go the way they wanted.

Babar Azam has not been impressive as a batsman and as a leader and there have been many reports that he will be dropped as the captain of the team after the World Cup. As a player, he did not play well and managed only three half-centuries.

Manoj Tiwary believes that Babar Azam could have done better and needs to be active. He added that a skipper needs to think outside the box and change his plans according to the game situation. Speaking to a local news channel, he explained (as quoted by Cricket Pakistan):

“I think Babar could have done better as a captain, he needs to be proactive and think a step ahead, for example seeing how he continued the example of Shadab's bowling as he struggled to find his rhythm.

I think it is better to remove a struggling bowler if he is not able to deliver properly. Need to be a proactive captain, Babar needs to think outside the box. He should be ready to change his plans according to the match situation.

Manoj Tiwari further highlighted MS Dhoni's skills as a captain and said that he will make the Pakistan team proud. He described Babar Azam as a great player and said it was unfair to blame him alone for the team's poor performance. He added:

“When the situation on the field is different you need to go against your initial plans. Give the Pakistan team under the leadership of MS Dhoni, I challenge that this team will be on a winning streak. Babar is a great player under a lot of pressure. It is unfair to blame him alone for Pakistan's results. He has the skills to join the giants like Sachin Tendulkar or Rohit Sharma. He is undoubtedly Pakistan's top batsman of this era."
