ICC Approves Four-Day Tests for Smaller Nations in World Test Championship 2027-29

Significant Decision by ICC for Test Cricket
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a noteworthy decision regarding the World Test Championship (WTC) for the 2027-29 cycle. The governing body is set to allow four-day Test matches for smaller cricketing nations. However, notable teams such as India, Australia, and England will continue to play traditional five-day Tests. This means that these teams will maintain their current format for Test matches, which is a positive move by the ICC.
Details from the ICC Meeting
According to a report from a prominent news outlet, during the WTC final at Lord's last week, ICC President Jay Shah expressed his support for the four-day Test format, aiming for its implementation in the upcoming WTC cycle. Shah is keen on initiating this change starting with the 2027-29 season. Meanwhile, England, Australia, and India will still compete in five-day Tests for prestigious series like the Ashes, Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Current Season of the World Test Championship
The current season of the World Test Championship commenced on June 17, featuring a Test series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The ICC's decision aims to encourage more smaller nations to participate in Test cricket and be prepared to host matches. Reports indicate that in four-day Tests, teams will bowl 98 overs per day instead of the usual 90.
India's Schedule for the Current Season
Team India is set to play a total of 18 Test matches in this season of the World Test Championship. Their first challenge will be a five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20, with Shubman Gill leading the team. Following this, India will host Test series against West Indies, South Africa, and Australia, and will also tour Sri Lanka and New Zealand, facing each team in two Test matches.
