Major Announcement by ICC Regarding WTC Finals

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a significant announcement regarding the future of the World Test Championship (WTC). The locations for the finals of the next three editions of this tournament have been revealed. Following a meeting in Singapore, the ICC issued a press release detailing this decision. Notably, all three upcoming WTC finals will take place in the same country.


England to Host WTC Finals in 2027, 2029, and 2031


England has been selected to host the finals of the World Test Championship in 2027, 2029, and 2031. This decision is seen as a crucial step towards enhancing the excitement of Test cricket. Several factors contributed to England's selection as the host nation, as it is regarded as the home of cricket. To date, three WTC finals have been held, all in England. The inaugural final in 2021 was contested between New Zealand and India in Southampton, while the 2023 final took place at The Oval. This time, the matches were held at the historic Lord's cricket ground.


In its press release, the ICC stated, 'Based on the successful track record of hosting recent finals, the England and Wales Cricket Board has been granted the rights to host the ICC World Test Championship finals for the 2027, 2029, and 2031 editions.'


Inception of the WTC in 2019


The World Test Championship was launched in 2019 to elevate Test cricket to new heights. This tournament aims to promote the Test format and maintain its relevance amidst the glitz of T20 and ODI formats. The final, held every two years, features the top two Test teams in the world.
