Palampur— As India commemorates the 26th anniversary of Captain Vikram Batra's martyrdom, the nation reflects on the legacy of this valiant soldier from the 1999 Kargil War. His bravery and sacrifice continue to motivate countless individuals. Born on September 9, 1974, in Palampur, Batra transitioned from an enthusiastic NCC cadet to a distinguished officer in the 13 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, leaving an indelible mark on military history.
Turning down a promising career in the Merchant Navy, Batra enrolled in the Indian Military Academy in 1996 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1997. His tactical genius shone during Operation Vijay, where he spearheaded the audacious assault on Point 5140, famously exclaiming, “Yeh Dil Maange More.”
On July 7, 1999, Captain Batra led a fierce offensive to reclaim Point 4875, now known as Batra Top in his memory. Despite sustaining severe injuries, he bravely exposed himself to enemy fire to save a comrade, ultimately sacrificing his life while uttering “Jai Mata Di.”
In recognition of his extraordinary valor, Captain Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military accolade, posthumously. His remarkable story was brought to life in the 2021 film Shershaah, featuring Sidharth Malhotra, ensuring that his legacy resonates with future generations.
