Indian Duo Shines at Thailand Open

On May 16, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty showcased an impressive performance at the Thailand Open, securing their place in the finals held at Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok. The match, which lasted 88 minutes, saw the top-seeded Indian pair overcome a shaky start to defeat Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin with scores of 19-21, 22-20, 21-16, marking their third final appearance at this event.

This final presents a significant opportunity for the Indian duo, who previously clinched their first Super 500 title at the same venue in 2019. Their last title win was in September 2025 at the China Masters, and they have not secured a World Tour title since May 2024. Despite their consistent performances since their quarterfinal exit at the 2024 Paris Olympics, they have struggled to claim a title.

Reaching the Thailand Open final could end their two-year title drought. After facing numerous challenges, including injuries and personal losses, Satwik and Chirag have shown resilience and determination, regaining their form and confidence on the court.

In the opening game against Goh and Nur, the Indian pair faced a tough battle but rallied in the second game, maintaining a lead until the end. Although the Malaysians fought back to tie the game at 20-20, Satwik's composure helped them clinch the game. In the deciding game, they dominated early on, leading 13-6 and eventually securing the match despite a late challenge from their opponents.

This victory marks their eighth win against Goh and Nur in ten encounters.

Consistency Without a Title

Despite their recent struggles, Satwik and Chirag have achieved remarkable milestones. They became the first Indian male shuttlers to win medals at the BWF World Championships and ended the previous season with a bronze at the BWF World Tour Finals. Since the beginning of 2025, they have consistently reached the semifinals or better in 12 out of 23 tournaments.

However, the absence of a title has kept them under scrutiny. They have expressed concerns about not receiving adequate recognition for their performances, despite their impressive track record. Satwik noted the positive feedback they received on social media, which has encouraged them ahead of the finals.

A title at this Super 500 event would significantly boost their confidence as they prepare for the World Championships in New Delhi and the Asian Games, where they are the defending champions. They also aim to avenge their previous losses to China, who defeated them in the Thomas Cup and the Asian Games team event.

In the final, Satwik and Chirag will compete against the winners of the second semifinal match between Leo Rolly Carnando-Daniel Marthin and He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu.
