India Clinches Victory in FIH Women's Nations Cup Final

In a remarkable performance, the Indian women's hockey team emerged victorious against New Zealand, winning 2-0 in the final of the FIH Women's Nations Cup 2025-26 held on Sunday. This victory marks India's return to the Pro League just a year after their relegation. The match took place at the North Harbour National Hockey Centre in Auckland, where India, currently ranked ninth globally, faced off against the tenth-ranked New Zealand. Goals from Navneet Kaur (4') and Sunelita Toppo (15') secured the win for India.

Early Dominance by India

Navneet Kaur, a seasoned striker, opened the scoring for India within the first five minutes by successfully converting a penalty corner. Following this early goal, the Indian team played with confidence, earning four more penalty corners in the first quarter and capitalizing on the last one to extend their lead. Sunelita Toppo's deft deflection of a dragflick doubled India's advantage. With eight penetrations into the circle and five penalty corners earned, India showcased their dominance in the first quarter. Although New Zealand attempted to increase their attacking efforts in the second quarter, the Indian defense, led by Salima Tete, maintained control, and India went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

New Zealand's Struggle and India's Defense

In the third quarter, New Zealand ramped up their intensity in an effort to turn the game around, presenting a more aggressive approach. However, the Indian goalkeeper, Bichu Devi Kharibam, remained largely untroubled due to the strong defensive play from her teammates. Early in the fourth quarter, the Black Sticks finally earned their first penalty corner but were unable to convert it into a goal. The match concluded with India securing a 2-0 victory.

India's Return to the Pro League

This triumph in the Nations Cup not only signifies a championship win but also ensures India's promotion back into the Women's FIH Pro League for the 2026-27 season, which will serve as a qualifier for the LA 2028 Olympics in hockey. India had been relegated to the FIH Nations Cup after finishing last in the previous Pro League season (2024-25). Interestingly, New Zealand, the previous champions of the FIH Women’s Nations Cup, opted out of their promotion to the Pro League, allowing the runners-up, Ireland, to take their place. Throughout the FIH Nations Cup 2026, India remained unbeaten, topping their group with narrow victories over the USA, Japan, and Uruguay, before decisively defeating Chile 6-0 in the semi-finals to reach the final.
