India Secures Quarterfinal Spot

In a commanding performance, India, the reigning Thomas Cup champions from 2022, defeated Australia 5-0 in their second Group A match, ensuring their advancement to the quarterfinals in Horsens, Denmark, on April 27. This victory followed their earlier win against Canada, where they triumphed 4-1, allowing the Indian team to acclimatize to the playing conditions ahead of their crucial final group match against top-seeded China. This upcoming tie presents an opportunity for India to seek revenge for their previous quarterfinal loss to China in 2024.

With China's leading singles player, Shi Yu Qi, withdrawing from the group stage due to illness, India is now favored to top their group. Shi's absence allowed Canada’s Victor Lai to secure a walkover victory. India is set to face China on Wednesday, and both teams have shown strong performances thus far, with China also achieving a 5-0 victory over Australia and a 4-1 win against Canada.

In the match against Australia, Lakshya Sen, who lost to Canada’s Viktor Lai in the first tie, opened the scoring for India with a solid 21-14, 21-16 win against Ephraim Stephen Sam. Following him, Ayush Shetty delivered a dominant performance, winning 21-8, 21-6 against Shrey Dhand, bringing the score to 2-0. The Asian Games gold medalists, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, clinched the victory for India with a straightforward 21-14, 21-16 win over Rizky Hidayat and Jack Vu. With the match already secured, Kidambi Srikanth was rested, allowing HS Prannoy to step in and win against Rishi Honda Boopathy with a score of 21-11, 21-17. The final match saw the men’s doubles team of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun complete the rout with a convincing 21-12, 21-10 victory over Andika Ramadiansyah and Sam.

In China’s match against Canada, Li Shi Feng emerged victorious over Brian Yang with scores of 23-21, 21-10. Their doubles team, Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, faced a tough challenge but managed to win 24-22, 21-14 against Kevin Lee and Ty Alexander Lindeman. The second doubles pair, He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu, also secured a win, defeating Kiran Deraj and Daniel Leung 21-15, 21-9, while Weng Hong Yang triumphed over Timothy Lock with a score of 21-15, 21-5.

Hong Yang is known to be a challenging opponent, having a 3-1 advantage over Kidambi Srikanth and a 2-2 record against HS Prannoy, making him a key player to watch in Shi's absence. However, with Satwik and Chirag in excellent form, a tough contest against Liang and Wang is anticipated. In the men’s singles, either Lakshya or Ayush will face Shi Feng, who recently lost to Ayush at the Asia Championships.
