Himachal Pradesh's Evolution in Winter Sports

The story of Himachal Pradesh's participation in the Khelo India Winter Games (KIWG) is one of determination and a deep-rooted passion for snow sports. Since the inception of the KIWG in 2020, this state has evolved from a hopeful participant to a formidable contender, consistently challenging more established winter sports regions.

The 2026 edition of the KIWG is currently taking place in Gulmarg from February 23 to 26, featuring top Indian skiers, including Winter Olympians. Earlier this year, the January segment of the KIWG was held from January 20 to 26.

During the inaugural KIWG in 2020, the event was celebrated as much for its festive spirit as for competition. The host state, Jammu and Kashmir, showcased its rich snow culture by dominating the medal tally, while Himachal Pradesh made a modest yet significant appearance, gaining valuable experience on a national platform.

By the second edition in 2021, with over 1,000 athletes participating, Himachal Pradesh's winter sports athletes began to establish their presence. Although not widely recognized yet, early signs of potential in Alpine and Nordic events hinted at future success.

The third edition in 2023 marked a significant breakthrough for Himachal Pradesh, as the team secured 10 gold, 14 silver, and 7 bronze medals, finishing third overall, just behind traditional winter sports powerhouses.

This achievement elevated Himachal Pradesh's athletes from mere participants to serious national contenders, with their flags proudly displayed alongside established teams on the Alpine slopes.

The 2024 edition solidified their status, as the state clinched 15 medals, including 5 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze, achieving an unprecedented second place in the national rankings despite limited winter sports infrastructure.

Aanchal Thakur emerged as a standout athlete, playing a crucial role in Himachal Pradesh's medal haul in 2025. Born in Manali, Thakur made history in 2018 as the first Indian skier to win a medal in an International Ski Federation event, and she secured two gold medals in the Alpine skiing slalom and giant slalom events at the 5th KIWG.

Reflecting on her journey, Aanchal shared, "The conditions were tough, but my spirits were high. I started skiing at five and have over 20 years of experience. Despite practicing on wooden skis initially, I trained in Europe after winning medals in junior nationals. My participation in the Winter Youth Olympics in 2012 was a pivotal moment for me."

Snowboarder Preeti Thakur also contributed significantly, achieving gold and podium finishes across various disciplines. Team events further propelled Himachal Pradesh's momentum, transforming individual efforts into collective triumphs.

At the 5th KIWG in 2025, Himachal Pradesh delivered a stellar performance, securing 6 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals, finishing joint second in total medals alongside the Indian Army, a consistent powerhouse in winter sports.

Athletes like Tenzin Dolma, who won gold in the women's ski mountaineering vertical race, and her teammate Natasha Mahar, who took silver, showcased remarkable endurance and skill. In the men's Alpine slalom, Yogesh Kumar clinched gold, reinforcing Himachal Pradesh's dominance in skiing.

The journey of Himachal Pradesh in the Khelo India Winter Games is a testament to relentless ambition and growth. From its tentative beginnings in 2020 and 2021 to becoming a key player in national winter sports by 2024 and 2025, the state's trajectory resembles a rapid ascent fueled by individual talent and collective determination.

The Games are set to conclude on February 26.
