Himachal Pradesh Apple Farmers Call for Ban on Turkish Apple Imports
Farmers Demand Ban on Turkish Apples
Apple growers in Himachal Pradesh are urging the Indian government to impose a total ban on the importation of Turkish apples, citing Turkey's political alignment during escalating tensions with Pakistan.
A coalition of farmers and fruit producers, led by Harish Chauhan, Convener of the Himachal Pradesh Sanyukt Kisan Manch, presented a memorandum to both the Prime Minister and President via the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
Chauhan expressed his frustration regarding Turkey's backing of Pakistan, especially during Operation Sindoor. He stated, "Turkey is an ally of our adversary. They supported Pakistan at a crucial moment when India was engaged in conflict. Conversely, when Turkey faced a devastating earthquake in February 2023, India extended humanitarian assistance. In return, Turkey betrayed us by aiding Pakistan."
He highlighted that Turkey is currently the leading exporter of apples to India, which he claims adversely affects local farmers. "The apple growers in Himachal, particularly those in the apple-producing regions, are suffering the most. Therefore, we are demanding a complete ban and a boycott of all Turkish apple imports into India," he added.
Economic Impact of Turkish Apple Imports
The delegation emphasized that India spends approximately Rs800 to Rs1,000 crore each year on apple imports, with a substantial portion directed towards Turkey. "We need to target the economic foundations of nations that support our enemies like Turkey. Halting Turkish apple imports will weaken their economy while benefiting our farmers," Chauhan remarked.
He mentioned that the Governor assured the delegation that their memorandum would reach the Prime Minister and President. Chauhan also expressed gratitude to farmer groups and traders from Madhya Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand who have committed to boycotting Turkish apples.
"I want to extend my thanks to the Indian populace, traders, and farmer organizations who have vowed to refrain from consuming or purchasing Turkish apples. A collective of 140 crore Indians has decided against these imports, sending a strong message," he stated.
Call for Increased Import Duties
The farmers also urged the central government to maintain high import duties on apples, recalling previous lobbying by Turkey and the United States for zero duties. "Reducing import duties on apples would be tantamount to a death sentence for farmers in Himachal, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand," Chauhan warned.
He called for the minimum import price (MIP) to be increased to at least Rs100 per kg and for higher import duties on apples from all countries, including Iran, to safeguard domestic farmers. "This is our request, and we hope the Indian government acts promptly in favor of our farmers," he concluded.
The farmers' strong demand for a ban on Turkish apple imports underscores their commitment to protecting local livelihoods and sending a clear message against foreign support for adversaries.
