Hien Truong Stuns Top Seed Federico Staksrud at MB Hanoi Cup
Truong's Remarkable Upset in Hanoi
In a surprising turn of events at the MB Hanoi Cup on April 4, qualifier Hien Truong, who is not even ranked in the top 50 of the DUPR standings, eliminated top seed Federico Staksrud at the My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena in Hanoi, Vietnam. Truong, currently ranked No. 8 in Asia, triumphed over Staksrud with scores of 11-7, 4-11, and 11-6, advancing to the finals of the PPA Tour Asia's opening tournament.
This defeat was particularly disappointing for Staksrud, who had recently secured titles at the Zimmer Biomet Cape Coral Open and the Veolia Texas Open. For Truong, this victory is a significant confidence booster as he prepares for the final match. He will compete against the winner of the semifinal between Dylan Frazier and Hoang Nam Ly, who previously upset Christian Alshon. If Nam Ly, ranked No. 6 in Asia, wins, it will lead to an all-Vietnamese final, with both players being in the top 50 of the DUPR rankings.
Truong's journey through the tournament has been impressive, showcasing his potential. The young Vietnamese player defeated Australia's Mitchell Hargreaves in the quarterfinals in straight games (11-4, 11-2) and Japan’s Kenta Miyoshi in the Round of 16, also in straight games (11-0, 11-2). In the first round, he dominated Yuta Funemizu from Japan with a commanding 11-4, 11-0 victory.
Earlier on Friday, Staksrud had a tough match against sixth-seeded Hong Kit Wong from Vietnam, winning 7-11, 11-6, 12-10. Truong's impressive performance has not only highlighted his skills but also the increasing competitiveness of Vietnamese pickleball. His ability to win matches in straight games leading up to the semifinal reflects his consistency and composure on the court.
Truong's semifinal match against Staksrud further demonstrated his resilience, especially after losing the second game. He effectively regrouped in the final game, controlling the pace and seizing crucial points to secure a memorable win. With this momentum, Truong enters the final filled with confidence, aware that another strong performance could mark a pivotal moment in his career on the PPA Tour Asia circuit.
