Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 20: The African Lions will be led by former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs in the upcoming Intercontinental Legends Championship (ILC), scheduled from May 27 to June 5 at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida.
Team owner Krishna Shetty expressed enthusiasm about Gibbs joining the squad, stating, "We are excited to have Herschelle Gibbs on board. His extensive experience and competitive spirit will not only enhance our team on the field but also motivate young players throughout Africa."
Gaurav Kamal, the founder and director of the Intercontinental Legends Championship, remarked, "The addition of the African Lions brings a vibrant energy and a rich legacy to the tournament, ensuring fans will enjoy thrilling matches and a stronger connection across cricketing nations."
The tournament will feature six teams: African Lions, Trans Titans (representing Australia and New Zealand), Euro Gladiators, American Strikers, Asian Kings, and Indian Warriors, each symbolizing different global regions.
In another exciting development, Suresh Raina will captain the Asian Kings, which boasts a star-studded lineup including former Sri Lankan opener Tillakaratne Dilshan and ex-Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan.
The championship kicks off on May 27 and culminates with the finals on June 5 at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex. With six continents represented, the ILC promises 18 thrilling matches that will elevate the sport to new heights.
Notably, former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan is also set to participate in the ILC, alongside international stars like Dilshan, former New Zealand player Martin Guptill, and Asghar Afghan. Additionally, former Indian bowlers Praveen Kumar and Manpreet Gony will represent the Indian Warriors in this prestigious tournament.
