Haryana Crowned Champion at National Para-Athletics
The 24th National Para-Athletics Championships 2026 wrapped up at the renowned Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday. The event's closing ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who recognized the outstanding states for their exceptional performances.
After four days of fierce competition featuring over 1,400 athletes, Haryana claimed the title of overall champion, leading the medal count with a total of 95 medals, which included 39 gold. Tamil Nadu secured the second position with 51 medals, while Gujarat followed closely in third place with 30 medals. The host state, Odisha, finished fifth overall, significantly aided by the impressive gold and silver medal achievements of star athletes Suchitra Parida, Jayanti Behera, and Janaki Oram.
Odisha Reinforces Its 'Sports Capital' Status with Upcoming Events
In his speech, Chief Minister Majhi reiterated Odisha's claim as the 'Sports Capital of India' by announcing several significant initiatives. He assured that the Kalinga Stadium complex will undergo further development to provide advanced sports facilities for both para-athletes and regular athletes. The Chief Minister emphasized that the Odisha government is fully equipped to offer comprehensive support for hosting any national or international sports events.
Bhubaneswar Set to Host 2028 World Indoor Championships
The Chief Minister also announced that Bhubaneswar will be the venue for the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2028. This will be a historic moment as it marks the first occasion India will host a global track and field championship. 'Odisha is ready to step onto the world stage. We are prepared to demonstrate our organizational capabilities and Indian hospitality to the global audience in 2028,' stated CM Majhi.
During a two-day meeting held on March 18-19, the World Athletics Council selected Odisha in India and Astana in Kazakhstan to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships in 2028 and 2030, respectively. This decision was made during the 240th World Athletics Council Meeting in Torun, Poland, prior to the World Athletics Indoor Championships Kujawy Pomorze 26. Additionally, Hefei in China was awarded the 2028 World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships.
