Harshit Rana Faces Reprimand for Code of Conduct Breach in ODI Against South Africa

Harshit Rana's Conduct Under Scrutiny

Dubai: Indian fast bowler Harshit Rana has received a reprimand for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during his team's victory over South Africa in the first ODI held in Ranchi.

Rana was found in violation of Article 2.5 of the ICC Code, which addresses the use of language, gestures, or actions that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter after their dismissal in an international match.

The incident occurred in the 22nd over of South Africa's innings when Rana made a gesture towards the dressing room after taking the wicket of Dewald Brevis.

This action was deemed potentially provocative, leading to Rana receiving one demerit point on his disciplinary record.

This marks Rana's first infraction in the last two years, and he acknowledged the violation, accepting the penalty recommended by Richie Richardson from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

"Rana accepted the charge and the proposed sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing," stated the ICC.

The on-field umpires, including Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, along with third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit, were responsible for levying the charge.

Level 1 breaches can result in a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum of 50% of a player's match fee, and one or two demerit points.

In the match, India triumphed over South Africa by 17 runs, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. India batted first, scoring 349/8, with Virat Kohli leading the charge with an impressive 135 runs, marking his 52nd ODI century, supported by fifties from Rohit Sharma (57) and KL Rahul (60).

South Africa's chase stumbled early as Rana took two wickets in one over, dismissing Rickelton and de Kock. Arshdeep Singh further pressured the visitors by removing skipper Markram, leaving them struggling.

Middle-order contributions from Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi, and Dewald Brevis helped stabilize the innings, but Kuldeep Yadav's four wickets consistently thwarted South Africa's progress.

Jansen's aggressive batting reignited hopes for the Proteas, and Bosch's determined fifty kept the match competitive until the final over, needing 19 runs. However, Prasidh Krishna's dismissal of Bosch sealed India's narrow win.
