Harbhajan Singh Defends Virat Kohli Amid Criticism Following ODI Century
Harbhajan Singh Stands Up for Kohli
Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has come to the defense of Virat Kohli, criticizing those who question the star batsman after he scored his 53rd ODI century against South Africa in the second match of their three-match series in Raipur. Kohli has been in exceptional form during this series, having previously scored 135 runs in the first ODI held in Ranchi, which India won by 17 runs.
Kohli's Impressive Performance
In the second ODI in Raipur, the 37-year-old Kohli showcased his talent by scoring 102 runs off 93 balls, helping India set a total of 358/5 in 50 overs. However, South Africa made a remarkable comeback, winning the match by four wickets and leveling the series at 1-1. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan emphasized that Kohli is a player who cannot be overlooked due to changes in the team dynamics. He questioned the critics who suggest that new players should take Kohli's place, stating, "If you think there’s no room for Virat Kohli, then what are you really saying?"
Praise for Ruturaj Gaikwad
Harbhajan also praised Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored his maiden ODI century in the same match. Batting at number four, Gaikwad made an impressive 105 runs off 83 balls. He formed a remarkable partnership of 195 runs for the third wicket with Kohli, marking the highest partnership for any wicket by India against South Africa in men's ODIs, surpassing the previous record of 194 runs set by Sachin Tendulkar and Dinesh Karthik in 2010.
Gaikwad's Rising Star
The former bowler remarked on Gaikwad's talent, noting that he has been a fantastic player who has not received enough opportunities until now. He highlighted how Gaikwad accelerated his scoring after reaching fifty, completing his century in just about 75 balls. The partnership between Ruturaj and Virat was described as exceptional.
