Gyaneshwari's Remarkable Achievement
On July 27, weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav made history by earning India's first medal at the Commonwealth Games, securing a silver in the women's 53kg category with a lift of 199kg. The 23-year-old athlete narrowly missed out on gold, finishing just behind Nigeria's Onome Omolola Didih. Gyaneshwari began her snatch event with an impressive lift of 82kg, followed by 85kg and 88kg. In the clean and jerk segment, she started at 103kg and progressed to lifts of 107kg and 111kg.
In an exclusive interview after her victory, Gyaneshwari shared insights into her journey, her rigorous training, and the influence of Indian weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu. She expressed her determination to secure a podium finish for India, aiming for gold but ultimately satisfied with her silver medal.
When asked about dedicating her medal, Gyaneshwari revealed that she first called her mother via video call to share the joyous moment. Her family, who had been eagerly watching the event live, were overwhelmed with happiness. She dedicated her achievement to her parents, acknowledging their sacrifices and hard work that enabled her to pursue her dreams.
Reflecting on her upbringing in Bhodiya, a small village in Rajnandgaon, Gyaneshwari recounted the challenges her father faced, including long hours of work and transporting her to training sessions. She emphasized that her family's support was crucial in her journey to success.
Gyaneshwari also spoke about the inspiration she draws from Mirabai Chanu, who has consistently brought glory to Indian weightlifting. She highlighted the encouragement she received from Chanu after her medal win, noting the importance of having role models in sports.
Addressing young girls aspiring to enter sports, Gyaneshwari encouraged them to pursue their passions without fear of societal judgments. She urged them to break stereotypes and emphasized that dedication and hard work will lead to success in any chosen field.
Looking ahead, Gyaneshwari is now focused on the upcoming Asian Games, recognizing the need for even more rigorous preparation to face tougher competition.
