Gulveer Singh Shatters National Record at NYC Half Marathon
Gulveer Singh's Remarkable Achievement
Indian distance runner Gulveer Singh has reached a significant career milestone by securing third place at the prestigious New York City Half Marathon. In doing so, he also broke the national men's record for the 21.1km distance on Sunday, showcasing an impressive performance against a competitive international lineup.
The 27-year-old athlete, representing the Army, completed the race in 59 minutes and 42 seconds, finishing just behind South Africa's Adriaan Wildschutt, who took first place with a time of 59:30. American long-distance runner Zouhair Talbi, originally from Morocco, came in second with a time of 59:41.
Previously, the national record stood at 1:00:30, set by steeplechase expert Avinash Sable during the Delhi Half Marathon in 2020.
Gulveer Singh is notable for being the first Indian distance runner to hold multiple national records, covering events from the 3,000m track race to the 25km road race. He is also an Asian Games medallist in the 10,000m event from the 2022 Asian Games and holds national records in both the men's 5,000m and 10,000m on the track.
His recent performance at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, was commendable, as he clinched victories in both the 5,000m and 10,000m races.
Looking ahead, he is optimistic about achieving podium finishes at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in July and the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya in September.
"I feel fit and am eager for positive outcomes in the upcoming major international competitions," stated the Army runner, who is currently training in Colorado Springs, USA.
