Glasgow, July 29: Gulveer Singh from India showcased an impressive late surge to clinch a silver medal in the men's 10,000m event, adding to his accolades which include a bronze from the Asian Games and two golds from the Asian Championships.
As one of India's premier long-distance athletes, Gulveer executed a remarkable final lap, finishing with a time of 27:49.78, marking his first Commonwealth Games medal in Glasgow on Tuesday night.
This achievement makes Gulveer the first Indian athlete to earn a medal in this event at the Commonwealth Games.
After a cautious start in the initial 400m, he maintained his position within the leading group for the majority of the race. In a thrilling finish, he surged ahead in the last lap, finishing just behind Australia's Ky Robinson (27:48.93) and ahead of David Mullarkey from the Isle of Man, who took bronze with a time of 27:50.28. Kenyan runner Edwin Kurgat closely followed in fourth place with a season-best of 27:50.98.
Gulveer, aged 28, began the race in second place and held onto a top-three position until just before the halfway point, where he dropped to sixth. As the pace intensified past the 5600m mark, he fell to ninth but regained momentum in the final 1000m, ultimately finishing strong in second place.
Although this time is slower than his personal best of 27:00.22, which is also the national record he set in 2025, it still highlights his competitive spirit.
Recognized as one of India's finest long-distance runners, Gulveer holds national records in the 3000m, 5000m, and 10,000m events. A Naib Subedar in the Grenadiers Regiment of the Indian Army, he hails from Sirsa village in Aligarh district, Uttar Pradesh, where he began his running career on local roads and farmland trails while preparing for army recruitment.
His international career took off with a bronze medal in the 5000m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, followed by a bronze in the 10,000m at the 2022 Asian Games. In 2025, he reached new heights by securing double gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Asian Athletics Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, solidifying his status as Asia's top long-distance runner.
