Transforming Gulmarg into a Winter Sports Destination

Gulmarg (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], February 26: During the closing ceremony of the second leg of the sixth Khelo India Winter Games, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, expressed the government's dedication to establishing the region as a leading global center for winter sports, as reported by a media release from SAI.

Mandaviya highlighted the vast potential of Kashmir, stating, "Gulmarg is poised to become the global hub for winter sports in the near future," while addressing attendees at the renowned Golf Course in Gulmarg.

The Minister underscored the unifying power of sports, which fosters camaraderie, promotes sportsmanship, and drives societal development. He reflected on his discussions with athletes and coaches at Khelo India Centres in Jammu & Kashmir, noting the impressive sporting spirit that is emerging from the area.

In a significant announcement, Mandaviya revealed plans to extend future editions of the Winter Games in Gulmarg into a comprehensive 15-day event that will merge sports with tourism and cultural festivities.

"The Winter Games will no longer be confined to just four days. By incorporating tourism, we aim to host a 15-day Winter Games featuring a Fit India Carnival, cultural events, and various competitions," he stated.

Additionally, the Union Minister announced the establishment of a National Centre of Excellence for winter sports in Jammu & Kashmir.

"Following the abrogation of Article 370, there is a renewed optimism in J&K. Previously, negative headlines dominated; now, sports are taking center stage. The landscape is changing in J&K, contributing significantly to PM Modi's vision of a developed India by 2027," Mandaviya remarked.

To enhance sports, culture, and tourism, and to elevate Gulmarg as a "world-class tourism destination," Mandaviya emphasized the need to fully harness the region's potential.

"Having traveled to 55 countries, including Switzerland, I was mesmerized by the breathtaking beauty of the Pir Panjal slopes today," he shared.

"I fully support a 15-day festival in Gulmarg, which will encompass winter sports competitions like skiing and snow mountaineering, alongside a FIT India carnival and cultural programs to create a festive atmosphere. We must do more to position this region as a global tourism hotspot," Mandaviya added.

During the event, Mandaviya honored the Indian Army team for successfully defending their Khelo India Winter Games championship title, having secured 23 medals, including nine golds, six silvers, and eight bronzes. The runners-up, Himachal Pradesh, received 14 medals, including six golds, while Haryana finished third.

Mandaviya noted that the Khelo Bharat Niti is reshaping Indian sports. "Khelo Bharat Niti will meet the aspirations of India's youth. The times have changed, and sports should remain apolitical. Our policies prioritize athletes over national federations," he stated.

Praising the Jammu and Kashmir administration for the successful execution of the Gulmarg leg of KIWG 2026, Mandaviya extended his congratulations to all involved, particularly the security forces, for ensuring a smooth event.

The first phase of KIWG 2026 took place in Ladakh from January 20-26, featuring over 900 athletes from 25 states and Union Territories competing in six different sports across Gulmarg and Leh.
