Gukesh's Remarkable Comeback

Stavanger [Norway], June 2: In a thrilling turn of events at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh secured a remarkable victory against former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen during Round 6, overcoming a challenging position on Sunday.

This victory marks Gukesh's inaugural classical win against the Norwegian grandmaster, making him only the second Indian to triumph over Carlsen in this prestigious tournament, following Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.

Throughout the match, Carlsen appeared to dominate, but as the game progressed, he faltered under pressure, allowing the young prodigy to seize the opportunity and clinch the win.

With this success, Gukesh ascended to third place in the Norway Chess 2025 standings, amassing 8.5 points, just one point shy of Carlsen and American player Fabiano Caruana.

Earlier, on May 27, the highly anticipated Round One clash saw Magnus Carlsen execute a classic king hunt to defeat reigning World Champion Gukesh in an exhilarating match. This encounter was their first classical game since Gukesh claimed the world title and marked Carlsen's return to individual classical chess after nearly a year.

In response to Gukesh's stunning victory, his coach, Grandmaster Vishnu Prasanna, commended the young player's determination and tenacity.

“We must acknowledge Gukesh's perseverance and ingenuity. He was aware of his precarious position for a long time, yet he continued to fight. As time dwindled, he found more opportunities to turn the situation around. While winning may not have been his initial goal, I believe he is thrilled with the outcome,” Vishnu Prasanna stated.

This victory has intensified the competition as the tournament approaches its concluding rounds, heightening the excitement among chess enthusiasts.
