Gujarat Titans Set Challenging Target of 230 Against Chennai Super Kings
Dominant Opening Partnership
In a thrilling match at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium, Gujarat Titans (GT) posted an impressive total of 229 runs for 4 wickets in their 20 overs, thanks to a century stand between skipper Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, along with a powerful half-century from Jos Buttler. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) now face the daunting task of chasing down 230 runs to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
GT's innings began with a strong performance from openers Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, who quickly found their rhythm against the CSK bowlers. They struck three boundaries off Spencer Johnson in the fourth over, setting the tone for the innings.
Sudharsan's straight drive brought up the team's 50 runs in just 5.1 overs. Gill celebrated a personal milestone by scoring his 6,000th run in T20 cricket with a six against Noor Ahmed in the seventh over, finishing that over with another six and taking GT to 78 runs.
Gill reached his half-century in a mere 23 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes. Sudharsan joined in the scoring spree, hitting a six and a four off Anshul Kamboj in the ninth over.
GT crossed the 100-run mark in 9.1 overs, with Gill and Sudharsan completing their century partnership for the seventh time this season. At the halfway mark, GT stood at 111 runs without losing a wicket, with Gill on 62* and Sudharsan on 43*.
Buttler's Late-Game Surge
Sudharsan continued his excellent form, achieving his fifth consecutive fifty of the season in just 35 balls, while the partnership of 125 runs was finally broken when Spencer Johnson dismissed Gill for 64 runs off 37 balls, which included seven fours and three sixes, thanks to a spectacular catch by Shivam Dube.
Following Gill's departure, Sudharsan and Buttler kept the momentum going, with Sudharsan hitting a four and Buttler smashing two sixes, bringing GT's total to 150 runs by the 14th over. At the end of the 15th over, GT was at 159/1, with Sudharsan on 26* and Buttler on 57*.
The duo continued to dominate, scoring freely against the CSK bowlers. Sudharsan's aggressive batting helped GT reach the 200-run mark in the 18th over. However, the 82-run partnership came to an end when Kamboj dismissed Sudharsan for 84 runs off 53 balls, which included seven fours and four sixes.
In the same over, Rahul Tewatia was run out without scoring. Buttler, meanwhile, reached his half-century in just 23 balls, hitting four boundaries and four sixes. Mukesh Choudhary then dismissed Washington Sundar for seven runs, caught behind.
GT concluded their innings at 229/4, with Buttler remaining unbeaten on 57 runs from 27 balls, featuring five fours and four sixes. The wickets were shared among Mukesh (1/36), Spencer (1/47), and Kamboj (1/56).
