Gout Gout Shatters U20 World Record in 200m Sprint
A New Star in Athletics
Gout Gout, the rising star in athletics, made headlines by setting a new Under-20 (U20) world record in the 200m event, finishing in an astonishing 19.67 seconds during the Australian Athletics Championships held in Sydney on April 12. This remarkable achievement also marked him as the first Australian athlete to break the 20-second barrier, surpassing his own national record of 20.02 seconds.
As excitement builds around his performance, comparisons to Usain Bolt have surfaced. Gout Gout's time at this age is notably faster than Bolt's best of 19.93 seconds, hinting at his potential for greatness. Despite this, Bolt still holds the world record for the 200m at 19.19 seconds, a record set in 2009. Gout Gout's consistent improvement has raised questions about the longevity of that record.
Before Gout Gout, the only athlete to have run under 20 seconds at this age was Erriyon Knighton, whose 2022 time of 19.69 seconds remains unratified due to a ban. Gout Gout's achievement places him in an elite category within the sport.
His manager, James Templeton, expressed that this breakthrough was anticipated rather than surprising. "Last year, he clocked 19.84 seconds at the nationals with a slight wind, so we believed he was capable of this time last year," Templeton stated.
Gout Gout himself shared that the goal of achieving a legal sub-20 time had been a significant focus for him. "I’ve been pursuing it ever since I recorded an illegal sub-20. It’s been on my mind for months, and I’m thrilled to have achieved it. I aimed for 19.75, and to run 19.67 is incredible," he remarked.
Having just turned 18, Gout Gout is optimistic about his future, stating, "I definitely think I can improve further. It’s about consistency with sub-20 times. There’s no pressure; I’m the only one out there competing against myself." His upcoming plans include participating in the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon from August 5 to 9, where he will focus on the 100m event instead of the 200m. Additionally, he is set to face Olympic champion Noah Lyles in a 150m race in Ostrava.
