Goa Set to Host FIDE World Cup 2025: A Milestone for Indian Chess

Prime Minister Modi Celebrates Chess Milestone

On August 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his enthusiasm for Goa being selected as the venue for the FIDE World Cup 2025, marking the first time in 23 years that India will host this prestigious chess event.

The announcement was made by FIDE, confirming that Goa will welcome elite chess players from around the world. The last time India hosted this tournament was in 2002 in Hyderabad, where grandmaster Viswanathan Anand emerged victorious.

In a post on X, PM Modi stated, "India is thrilled to host the esteemed FIDE World Cup 2025 after more than two decades. Chess is increasingly popular among our youth, and I anticipate exciting matches that will highlight the talents of top players globally."

Tournament Details and Format

This highly anticipated event will feature 206 competitors vying for a prize pool of USD 2,000,000 and three spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament. The knockout format promises intense competition, with each round being a win-or-go-home scenario.

Scheduled from October 30 to November 27, the tournament will consist of eight rounds, each featuring two classical games. If necessary, rapid and blitz playoffs will determine the winner in case of tied games. The top three players will qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

India's Chess Legacy

India has established itself as a powerhouse in chess over the years. Last year, D Gukesh claimed the World Championship title, and Indian teams excelled in the Chess Olympiad, winning in both the Open and Women’s categories. This July, Divya Deshmukh made history as the first Indian to win the Women’s Chess World Cup, drawing significant attention to the sport.

The upcoming Open World Cup in Goa builds on this momentum, allowing local fans to witness their favorite players compete at home.

FIDE's Vision for the Event

FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich remarked, "India has emerged as one of the leading chess nations, boasting exceptional players and enthusiastic fans. Following the success of the FIDE Women’s World Cup in Georgia earlier this year, we are excited to bring the FIDE World Cup to Goa. This event will celebrate chess and offer a unique experience for players and fans alike, with representatives from over 90 countries expected to participate."

Nitin Narang, President of the All India Chess Federation, called it a "proud moment for Indian chess," emphasizing their commitment to hosting a world-class event that reflects the passion of Indian fans and the professionalism of the federation. He expressed gratitude to FIDE for the opportunity to host the World Cup 2025 in Goa.
