Global Soccer Fans Unite: Demand for FIFA President Infantino's Resignation Grows
Petition Launched Against FIFA President
Geneva: A coalition of soccer fan organizations from various countries has initiated a petition demanding the resignation of Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA. This action follows his controversial attempt to sell future World Cup revenues to private investors.
The petition, which is trending under the hashtag #InfantinoOut, also advocates for a complete overhaul of FIFA to prevent similar situations in the future.
The document criticizes Infantino's actions as a betrayal of the sport, stating, "The disgraceful effort by the FIFA President to commercialize the World Cup has revealed a betrayal that football will not forget." This plan was abandoned after facing significant backlash.
Participating fan groups include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and the Independent Supporters Council from North America, along with approximately 40 national fan organizations globally.
Despite UEFA's lack of confidence in him and criticism from CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has resisted calls for his resignation.
The petition highlights Infantino's leadership failures, stating, "His concentration of power, lack of transparency, and absence of accountability have eroded trust in FIFA."
It concludes by asserting that for FIFA's credibility and the sport's future, Infantino must step down, referencing his previous support for unpopular initiatives like the European Super League and the proposal for biennial World Cups.
