Glenn Maxwell Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. The 35-year-old has concluded his 13-year ODI career, leaving fans and cricket enthusiasts surprised by his sudden decision. Maxwell has also shared the reasons behind his retirement.
Maxwell made his ODI debut on August 25, 2012, playing his first match against Afghanistan in Sharjah, where he scored only 2 runs. His final ODI appearance was during the Champions Trophy 2025, where he faced India in the semi-finals, scoring just 7 runs before being dismissed by Axar Patel.
In his retirement announcement, Maxwell expressed his desire to focus more on T20 International cricket, particularly with the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2026 in mind.
During an interview on The Final Word podcast, he mentioned, 'I have always said that if I feel I am contributing equally to my team, I would never step away from ODIs. However, I did not want to play for selfish reasons.'
Maxwell also highlighted the physical demands of ODI cricket, especially due to his leg injury, which has been affecting his performance. He felt that he might not be able to sustain his form until the 2027 ODI World Cup, prompting his decision to retire. He discussed the 2027 World Cup with his coach, stating, 'I don’t think I can make it there; it’s time to start planning for other players to take my place. I have always said I wouldn’t leave my position until I felt I was still good enough to play. I didn’t want to stick around for just a few series for selfish reasons.'
