Inauguration of Sarguja Olympics 2026

On March 21, Indian wrestler Geeta Phogat attended the opening ceremony of the Sarguja Olympics 2026 in Ambikapur, Chhattisgarh, expressing pride in hosting such sporting events in the region.

During her interaction with the press, Phogat emphasized the significance of grassroots competitions in motivating aspiring athletes.

She stated, "It’s truly commendable that events like these are taking place in Sarguja, Chhattisgarh. They ignite passion and enthusiasm among children. I recall my school days when we looked up to guests and dreamed of being in their shoes. The Chhattisgarh government is currently very proactive in promoting sports," she remarked.

The three-day event was officially launched by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, who noted that Phogat's presence would greatly inspire the young competitors.

In his address, the Chief Minister said, "The Sarguja Olympics will continue for three days, and I wish all the athletes the best. I also extend my gratitude to Geeta Phogat for uplifting the spirits of the participants."

Phogat expressed her appreciation to the Chhattisgarh government for the invitation and encouraged the daughters of the state and all athletes to strive for excellence and bring honor to the nation. She quoted a famous line from the film Dangal, which reflects her journey: "Are our girls any less than the boys?"

Additionally, she provided valuable advice to young women in Sarguja, focusing on building self-confidence and determination to succeed in sports.

Sarguja is one of three cities in Chhattisgarh set to host the inaugural Khelo India Tribal Games (KITG) from March 26 to April 6, alongside Raipur and Jagdalpur.

The Games will showcase seven medal sports, including athletics, football, hockey, weightlifting, archery, swimming, and wrestling, along with two demonstration sports: Mallakhamb and Kabaddi. Participants will represent various states and Union Territories across India.
