Ganges Grandmasters Secure Final Spot

On Saturday, the Ganges Grandmasters clinched a place in the finals of the Global Chess League (GCL) held in Bengaluru, despite suffering a defeat against PBG Alaskan Knights. Meanwhile, the Alpine APL Pipers are left awaiting the outcome of their final league match after losing to Triveni Continental Knights.

Final Round-Robin Matches

Both the Alpine APL Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters entered their last round-robin matches with 18 match points each. A victory against their opponents, who were positioned at the bottom of the standings, would have guaranteed them a spot in the finals, according to a press release.

Triveni Kings Upset Defending Champions

In a surprising turn, the two-time champions, Triveni Continental Kings, disrupted the finals race by becoming the first team in Season 4 to defeat the Pipers in both encounters, winning the first match of the day with a score of 11-6.

Ganges Grandmasters Advance

Following the Pipers' loss, the Ganges Grandmasters only needed to secure one game point against PBG Alaskan Knights to progress to the finals based on a superior game point score. This goal was achieved when Ian Nepomniachtchi drew with Viswanathan Anand on the icon board, while Stavroula Tsolakidou triumphed over Nino Batsiashvili, giving the Grandmasters an early lead.

Player of the Match, Abhimanyu Mishra, outperformed Luke Leon Mendonca in 32 moves on the prodigy board, although Leinier Dominguez Perez from the Grandmasters lost on time during a frantic finish.

Pipers vs. Kings: Match Highlights

In the earlier match, the Alpine APL Pipers started strong, but Aravindh Chithambaram tightened the pressure on Vidit Gujrathi's white king, ultimately winning the match in 36 moves despite a tense endgame.

Alireza Firouzja then halted the Pipers' momentum by forcing world number one Magnus Carlsen to resign after 49 moves, marking Carlsen's first loss in the competition and Firouzja's inaugural victory, keeping his team's hopes alive for a third-place playoff.

Volodar Murzin's victory over Pranav V on the prodigy board ensured the Pipers secured at least six points, maintaining their chances for a final berth.

Looking Ahead: The Final Spot

The FYERS American Knights have the opportunity to surpass the Pipers for the final spot if they defeat CheQ Mumba Masters in their last league game and achieve a minimum of nine game points.
