Gio Morelli's Unexpected Path to Professional Pickleball

Gio Morelli, who once dismissed the notion of playing pickleball, has transformed into a notable name in the sport in less than two years. The Florida resident joined the PPA Tour in 2025 after a rigorous series of qualifying events, a journey she describes as somewhat serendipitous. "About a year and a half ago, while working at a country club in West Palm, Florida, a member suggested I try pickleball. Initially, I laughed off the idea since I was a tennis player. However, after playing once a week, I quickly fell in love with it," Morelli shared.

Having a background in tennis, she initially mirrored the skepticism many tennis enthusiasts hold towards pickleball. "I was definitely one of those tennis players who looked down on pickleball. My parents played it, and I thought it was just for older folks. But I soon appreciated the game's fast pace. Being not particularly tall, I struggled with covering the tennis court, but the smaller pickleball court suits me better," she reflected.

It wasn't long before pickleball became integral to her life. "Playing pickleball has brought me the happiest moments I've ever experienced. I love how quickly players can improve, which motivates me to practice consistently," she noted.

Once she committed to the professional circuit, Morelli dedicated herself fully to the challenge. "I participated in qualifiers for about six months before signing in September 2025. Being young, I felt it was now or never to pursue my pro dreams," she explained.

The journey was anything but easy. "It was tiring, but I was determined to invest in myself. I funded everything independently, which pushed me to work harder," Morelli emphasized. "There was no pressure to meet anyone else's expectations; this was solely for me."

To support her professional goals, Morelli spends extensive hours coaching at a country club. "I teach pickleball for seven hours daily, which helps cover my tournament travel expenses. I aim to drill at least once a day, but it can be quite demanding," she said.

Now that she has secured her spot on the PPA Tour, Morelli aspires to motivate others pursuing similar dreams. "Hard work is essential. Nothing is handed to you, and everyone has their own timeline. There were moments I felt discouraged watching others get signed while I was still in the qualifiers. It's crucial to trust that your time will eventually come," she advised.
