Suryakumar Yadav Dropped as T20I Captain, Shreyas Iyer Takes Charge
Leadership Change in India's T20I Team
After a prolonged period of underperformance, Suryakumar Yadav has been removed from his position as captain of the Indian T20I team. Despite leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, his recent batting struggles led the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to make this tough decision. Consequently, he has also been excluded from the T20I squad.
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain, having demonstrated his leadership skills by guiding the Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final and performing well in the subsequent season, despite the team narrowly missing the playoffs.
Ajit Agarkar, the Chief Selector, commented on the decision, stating, "Shreyas was very close to being included in the T20 World Cup squad. It was a difficult choice regarding Suryakumar Yadav, but it's essential to reevaluate our strategy moving forward. Shreyas is a deserving captain with ample experience."
India Squad: Shreyas Iyer (C), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (VC), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Md Siraj, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
