Ryan Williams Makes His Debut for India in AFC Asian Cup Qualifier
Ryan Williams Joins India's Squad
On March 31, Ryan Williams was included in India's starting lineup for their AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Hong Kong, held at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi. This match will be significant as it marks the debut of the former Australian player for the Blue Tigers, who will wear the number 10 jersey. He will be positioned in the forward line alongside teammates Lallianzuala Chhangte, Apuia, Manvir Singh, Abhishek Tekcham, and Liston Colaco. Although this match is considered a dead rubber since neither team can qualify for the tournament scheduled in Saudi Arabia later this year, the 32-year-old's participation has sparked considerable interest among Indian football fans.
Background of Ryan Williams
Ryan Williams hails from Perth, Australia, and plays as a winger. His mother, Audrey, has Anglo-Indian roots, while his father is originally from Kent, England. His maternal grandfather, Lincoln Grostate, was also a footballer who represented Bombay (now Mumbai) in the Santosh Trophy. Ryan began his football journey with Portsmouth, a club in the Premier League, where he came through the youth academy. He later played for Fulham, a club known for its presence in England's top tier, and had loan spells at Gillingham, Oxford United, and Barnsley before making a permanent move to Barnsley. Afterward, he played for Rotterdam United and returned to Portsmouth, with his final stint in English football being at Oxford United. In 2022, he returned to Australia to join Perth Glory. Despite his extensive career in England, he never made an appearance in the Premier League, spending most of his time in the Championship, League 1, and League 2. Ryan's journey in Indian football began in 2023 when he signed with Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), where he has netted 13 goals in 46 appearances. Additionally, he has represented Australia internationally, playing in a friendly match against South Korea in 2017 as a substitute. Notably, Ryan is the first Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) to represent the Indian national football team since Arata Izumi in 2014.
