Rohit Sharma and Prasidh Krishna Shine in Historic ODI Performance
Historic Bowling Partnership in Chennai
During the ongoing third ODI match against Afghanistan in Chennai, Rohit Sharma and Prasidh Krishna made history by taking the first three wickets of the innings. This remarkable feat marked a first in India's extensive ODI history, spanning 1078 matches, as Rohit caught the edges of the entire Afghan top order off Prasidh's fiery opening spell at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Rohit Sharma and Prasidh Krishna's Unprecedented Achievement
Previously, there have been two instances where a fielder has taken three catches off a single bowler in an ODI for India. VVS Laxman achieved this with Irfan Pathan against Zimbabwe in Perth in 2004, and Shikhar Dhawan did so with Jasprit Bumrah against Bangladesh in Dubai in 2018. However, neither of those instances involved the bowler and fielder taking three consecutive wickets, let alone the first three wickets of the innings. In the case of Prasidh and Rohit, the wickets were remarkably similar.
Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the first to go, dismissed by Prasidh with the very first ball of his spell, a well-placed delivery that swung away, leading to an outside edge caught cleanly by Rohit at first slip. Prasidh's pace, seam movement, and bounce consistently troubled the Afghan batsmen as he targeted the off-stump channel effectively.
Before Ibrahim Zadran fell victim to the same combination, Rohit also caught Rahmat Shah, who edged another challenging delivery. Prasidh continued his impressive performance by claiming his fourth wicket, dismissing Darwish Rasooli, who mis-hit a delivery that was beautifully caught by Shreyas Iyer. This marked only the seventh time an Indian pacer has taken four or more wickets during the batting powerplay in an ODI. For Rohit, it was just the third time a single fielder had taken the first three wickets in an innings, putting India in a commanding position with Afghanistan struggling at 36/4.
