New York, July 20: Spanish midfielder Rodri has been awarded the Golden Ball, recognizing him as the FIFA World Cup Player of the Tournament for his outstanding performances during the 2026 event.
In a thrilling final, Spain, the reigning European champions, triumphed over Argentina in extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal.
Rodri was instrumental in the midfield for La Roja throughout their eight matches, contributing significantly to their second World Cup victory.
He participated in every match, leading the tournament in completed passes, distance covered, and player involvements, showcasing his exceptional skills.
His ability to connect defense and attack, along with timely tackles and precise passing, was crucial in Spain's success, particularly in the 1-0 win against Argentina in the final held at New York New Jersey Stadium.
In the championship match, the 30-year-old completed 101 out of 105 passes, won 80% of his duels, and created two scoring opportunities. Overall, his strategic play helped Spain concede only one goal throughout the tournament.
Rodri has now joined an elite group, becoming the 11th player in football history to win the World Cup, UEFA Champions League, and Ballon d'Or.
After securing the prestigious Ballon d'Or in 2024, he has now enhanced his trophy collection with the World Cup Golden Ball, having previously won the same accolade at the European Championships two years ago.
Additionally, Rodri's teammate Pau Cubarsi was honored as the Young Player of the Tournament, while Unai Simon received the Golden Glove for his seven clean sheets.
