A Heartfelt Tribute to Diogo Jota

During their opening match against Congo at the 2026 FIFA World Cup held at NRG Stadium in Houston on June 17, Portugal paid a touching tribute to the late Diogo Jota. The event was made even more special with the presence of Jota's parents, who were invited by the Portuguese Football Federation. As the national anthem played, a photo of Jota was displayed on the big screen, prompting a wave of applause from the audience. The emotional moment was palpable, especially for Jota's parents, who were visibly moved by the honor.

In addition to the tribute, the Portuguese team wore special bracelets featuring the names of all 26 players selected for the tournament, including Jota. Tragically, Diogo and his younger brother, Adrian, lost their lives in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, on July 3 of the previous year. Jota's last appearance for the national team was during Portugal's victory in the UEFA Nations League final against Spain on June 9, 2025, where he played as a substitute in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw. Since making his debut in 2019, Jota represented Portugal 49 times, scoring 14 goals and winning two major trophies, including the Nations League title. At the time of his passing, he was a key player for Liverpool, having joined the club in 2020 and winning the Premier League title in his final season. Prior to Liverpool, he played for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
