GUWAHATI, Aug 13: Forward Parthib Gogoi of NorthEast United FC has expressed that the team's primary goal is to retain the Durand Cup title. This comes after the Highlanders secured a flawless Group F performance, defeating FC1 of Kashmir 3-1, which ensured their place in the quarterfinals at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.
In the recent match, Parthib contributed significantly by scoring two goals, helping NorthEast United FC achieve victory in all their group stage encounters. Previously, the Highlanders had triumphed over Bodoland FC with a staggering 6-0 scoreline and also claimed a 4-1 win against Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC.
“Our sole focus right now is to defend the Durand Cup. The tournament has been fantastic for us so far, and we are determined to keep the trophy at home,” Parthib stated following the match.
The 23-year-old from Sivasagar has made a remarkable impression in the tournament, yet he emphasizes that personal accolades are secondary to the team's achievements.
“As I’ve always maintained, my happiness comes from the team’s victories, regardless of whether I score. That’s what truly matters,” he remarked.
Having made his senior debut for India in a friendly against Tajikistan in June, Parthib is eager to build on his club's strong performance as they advance to the knockout phase.
The Highlanders are in pursuit of their third Durand Cup title, having won the last two editions under the guidance of head coach Juan Pedro Benali.
“Our complete focus is on the Durand Cup right now. With the ISL and Federation Cup also on the horizon, we aim to excel in all three tournaments,” Parthib added.
NorthEast United FC is now gearing up for the quarterfinals, determined to continue their title defense and achieve a hat-trick of Durand Cup victories.
