Neymar's World Cup Aspirations Hang in the Balance Amid Injury Concerns
Neymar's Uncertain Future with Brazil National Team
The prospect of Neymar participating in another FIFA World Cup is becoming increasingly doubtful as time runs out and the margin for error diminishes. During a tense match at Vila Belmiro, the Brazilian star had a subdued performance in Santos’ 1-1 draw against Corinthians on Sunday, a result that did little to bolster his chances just hours before a significant squad announcement.
This match marked Neymar's final appearance before Brazil's coach Carlo Ancelotti reveals his squad for two important friendlies scheduled for March 16. Neymar, who holds the record as Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, is under pressure to prove his fitness.
Brazil's upcoming matches against France and Croatia in the United States will serve as the last opportunities for players to impress before Ancelotti finalizes his roster for the World Cup, which is set to take place from June 11 to July 19.
For Neymar, this period feels like a race against time, as he grapples with both form and fitness issues. The 34-year-old entered Sunday’s game facing scrutiny after missing a previous match attended by Ancelotti, and his performance against Corinthians did not provide the answers he needed.
Corinthians took the lead in the 19th minute thanks to Memphis Depay, but Santos equalized shortly after with a goal from Gabriel Barbosa. Neymar's best chance came in the second half when his header went just wide, and he struggled to make an impact, failing to register a shot on target.
The significance of the match was amplified by the presence of two officials from Brazil’s football confederation, as noted by Santos. Despite the challenges, Neymar expressed his desire to return to the national team and compete in the World Cup, stating, “I wish to go back to the national team and play in the World Cup, but that’s not up to me. Whether I am there or not, I will always cheer for Brazil.”
Ancelotti has emphasized that only fully fit players will be selected for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He has also indicated that some players may not require testing, which keeps Neymar's hopes alive for making the final squad, even if he is not included in the upcoming friendlies.
Despite the ongoing concerns regarding his fitness, Neymar's journey back has shown some positive signs, albeit with interruptions. After suffering an ACL injury in October 2023 and undergoing knee surgery in December, he has played fewer than 10 matches for Santos this year, though he has displayed moments of brilliance.
One notable performance came in February when he scored twice in a 2-1 victory against Vasco da Gama, propelling him into the top 10 of Santos’ all-time leading scorers. However, worries about his availability persist, especially after he opted out of a match against Mirassol on Tuesday, which could jeopardize his chances of participating in a fourth consecutive World Cup. Local reports indicated that Ancelotti was only informed of Neymar’s absence a few hours before the match at the Jose Maria de Campos Maia Stadium, which has a capacity of 19,000.
