Lionel Messi Faces Familiar Referee in FIFA World Cup Semi-Final Against England
Messi's Lucky Charm: Ismail Elfath as Referee
As Argentina prepares to clash with England in the FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, Lionel Messi will be officiated by a referee he knows well. FIFA has appointed Ismail Elfath to oversee this crucial match in Atlanta. This choice has sparked discussions, particularly since Messi has never experienced defeat in any match officiated by Elfath. The Argentine captain's team has triumphed in all five encounters where the Moroccan-American referee has been involved, whether as the main official or in another role.
Some England fans expressed their concerns regarding FIFA's decision, igniting debates on social media. However, there is no evidence suggesting that Elfath's officiating has influenced match results in any way.

The 44-year-old Elfath is set to officiate his fourth World Cup match in 2026. He previously managed Norway's surprising 2-1 win over Brazil in the Round of 16, along with Japan's 2-2 draw against the Netherlands and Spain's 1-0 victory over Uruguay during the group stage. He will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins.
Elfath has already been part of one of Messi's significant matches, serving as the fourth official during the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar, where Argentina claimed victory over France in a dramatic penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Background of Ismail Elfath
Who is Ismail Elfath?
Born in Casablanca, Morocco, Elfath moved to the United States in 2001 through the Diversity Visa Program. He later earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Texas, became a US citizen, and currently resides in Austin, Texas. His journey into refereeing began almost by chance; after expressing dissatisfaction with officiating standards while playing as a striker for the amateur team Austin Lightning, he was encouraged by the league organizer to try refereeing himself.
"I was a hot-headed player. I always complained to the guy that ran the league, and then one day he said, You always complain. Why don't you become a referee?" Elfath recounted in an interview with the Austin Chronicle in 2022. While working in IT sales, he started officiating youth, high school, and semi-professional matches. In 2011, he became a fourth official in Major League Soccer and was promoted to a full-time referee the following season.
Elfath made history in 2016 by earning his FIFA badge and was the first to supervise an on-field Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review during a USL Championship match between Orlando City B and New York Red Bulls II. Over the years, he has established himself as one of North America's leading officials, winning MLS Referee of the Year awards in 2020 and 2022. He also officiated the 2023 Leagues Cup final, where Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in Inter Miami's victory over Nashville SC in a penalty shootout, securing their first championship.
