Historic Debut for Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal etched his name in history by scoring for Spain against Saudi Arabia during his first FIFA World Cup match at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Atlanta. The young Barcelona talent, aged 18, netted his inaugural goal in the tournament in the first half, marking a significant milestone as Spain triumphed with a 4-0 victory. The European champions dominated the first half, leading 3-0 at halftime, with Mikel Oyarzabal contributing two goals in the 21st and 25th minutes. An own goal in the second half added to Spain's tally, initially credited to Marc Cucurella, but later confirmed to be an error by Hassan Atlambakti.

Spain's Remarkable Achievement

At just 18 years, 11 months, and 8 days, Yamal became the eighth youngest player to score in FIFA World Cup history, surpassing Lionel Messi's record from 2006. He is also the second-youngest Spanish player to score in the tournament, following his Barcelona teammate Gavi, who was younger when he scored in 2022. This achievement makes Spain the first team in the 96-year history of the World Cup to feature two goal scorers aged 18 or younger. They join a select group of four teams with multiple teenage goal scorers, with Brazil being the only nation to have three.

Teams with Multiple Teenage Goal Scorers in FIFA World Cup History

Team Teenage Goalscorers
Spain Gavi (18 years, 3 months, 18 days in 2022), Lamine Yamal (18 years, 11 months, 8 days)
England Michael Owen (18 years, 6 months, 8 days in 1998) and Jude Bellingham
Senegal Ibrahim Mbaye (18 years, 4 months, 23 days in 2026), Moussa Wagué
Brazil Pele (17 years, 7 months, 27 days in 1958), José Altafini

Yamal also made history as the second-youngest player to score the opening goal of a World Cup match, following Pele's record in 1958. He is now the youngest European player to score in both the Euros and the FIFA World Cup, with only Pele having achieved this feat at a younger age. Gavi, who is the third-youngest goal scorer in World Cup history, played as a substitute in this match but had started in Spain's opening game. He is among a rare group of players who have participated in two World Cups before turning 22, alongside legends like Pelé and Samuel Eto'o.
