Travel Restrictions for Iran's Football Team

The Iranian national football team is set to enter the United States for their matches in the FIFA World Cup but will have to depart on the same day. They are scheduled to compete in three group stage matches, starting with a game against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 16. Following that, they will face Belgium in California on June 22, and conclude their group stage against Egypt in Seattle on June 27. If they advance to the knockout stage, additional matches may follow.

Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran’s envoy, confirmed this travel arrangement, stating, “We can enter in the morning, and we must leave the same day.” This announcement contradicts earlier statements from team spokesperson Amir Mahdi Alavi, who indicated that the visas granted to the team allowed for multiple entries. Alavi had mentioned that the team would arrive a day before their first match and two days prior to subsequent games.

Previously, the Iranian team relocated their base from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, to address visa complications and minimize their time in the U.S. During the World Cup, it is anticipated that the team will remain in Mexico. Local officials have expressed no objections to this arrangement, with one stating, “The United States does not want the Iranian team to stay overnight, but they are going to play three matches there.”

Visa Issues Affecting Key Officials

While the U.S. has issued visas for the Iranian football team, reports indicate that several key support staff members, including the head of the Iranian football federation, Mehdi Taj, were not granted entry.
