Iran Football Team Issues Warning to FIFA Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Iran's Stance on World Cup Participation

The Iranian national football team has raised concerns with FIFA regarding the upcoming 2026 World Cup, threatening to withdraw from matches if unauthorized flags or slogans are displayed during their games. This statement was made by Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal just before the tournament, which is set to occur from June 11 to July 19 across the USA, Mexico, and Canada. Iran has encountered numerous challenges in participating due to ongoing military tensions with the USA. All three of their group stage matches are slated to be held in the USA, and their participation was uncertain until recently.

"We have communicated to FIFA that if any unofficial flags are shown or if chants against our national team are heard in the stadiums during our World Cup matches, the team manager will be compelled to halt the game," Donyamali stated, as reported by Iranian media.

The final group stage match against Egypt in Seattle has been labeled a 'Pride Match,' leading to some controversy. Nevertheless, Donyamali expressed confidence, stating they have received assurances that no disruptive incidents will occur during the match against Egypt. Iran's first game in Group G is scheduled against New Zealand on June 15 at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. They will then compete against Belgium at the same venue on June 21, followed by their concluding match against Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle. Due to logistical challenges, Iran has had to relocate their training base to Mexico and will only be permitted to enter the USA on match day, with a requirement to exit immediately after their games.
