Iran Football Team Faces Immediate Departure After World Cup Draw
Iran's Coach Expresses Frustration Over Quick Exit
Amir Ghalenoei, the head coach of the Iranian football team, disclosed that his squad was instructed to leave the United States right after their 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SOFI Stadium in Los Angeles during the FIFA World Cup. Initially, the team had planned to stay overnight in California for recovery, but they were abruptly ordered to return to their training base in Tijuana, Mexico. Ghalenoei expressed his disappointment, stating, “They didn’t even give us time to recover.” He emphasized the importance of recovery time, noting that the team was troubled by the sudden directive to board a flight back to their camp.
Iran's participation in the World Cup has been overshadowed by ongoing crises in the Middle East, leading to various challenges. The team had considered withdrawing from the tournament but ultimately decided to compete after FIFA denied their request to relocate matches outside the U.S. They faced visa issues and had to change their base from Arizona to Tijuana to avoid further complications.
Ghalenoei labeled his team as the most “oppressed” at the World Cup, highlighting the difficulties they have encountered even before the tournament commenced. He remarked, “They delayed our arrivals, and they are forcing us to go back early without time for recovery.” He noted that several players experienced cramps during the match, which necessitated substitutions not due to tactical reasons but rather injuries and fatigue. The players are set to be evaluated by the technical staff on Tuesday.
